Autumn 1
Homework
Homework is given out on a Wednesday and is due in the following Wednesday. During each Wednesday afternoon, the children have the opportunity to go over their homework and discuss any elements they may need further support with. Mrs Edwards also runs a homework club on a Thursday lunchtime from 1:05-1:30pm for any children who either want to complete some of their homework or would like some time to discuss an aspect of the homework with a teacher.
Spellings are given on a Friday (15 per week) from their spelling stages booklets and are practised in school 4 x weekly. Spellings are tested on a Friday. Learning these at home too would be most beneficial for the children and would help them to progress in their spellings.
In year 6, we would expect children to be reading for 20 minutes daily at home. This can be either independent reading or reading to an adult. This will help the children to develop a love of reading and also improve their fluency and comprehension skills. 
English
In Year 6 we base each of our units of writing work on a high quality text. We write for the four purposes of writing- to entertain, to inform, to persuade and to discuss. These purposes are revisited across the year so the children are able to become familiar with each purpose and write with increased confidence and understanding.
In the first half term of the year, these are the units we will be covering:

Art and DT
Art will be linked to our topic on Ancient Maya. The children will be completing some printmaking- monoprinting and press printing- based around the Ancient Maya.

PE
PE is on a Wednesday afternoon (in groups of 16) taught by Mr.Gunner and as a whole class on Friday afternoon with Mrs. Bryant. For the first half term, the children will not need to change for PE (except for a change of footwear) in response to Covid-19. 

French
We will be starting our French work with looking at 'Weather'

Music

 For the first 6 weeks we will be completing a unit called 'Classroom Jazz'. For more detailed information click here
