Our Computing Curriculum

Intent

Through the teaching of our computing curriculum at Stonham Aspal Primary school, we aim for the children to become responsible, independent and safe users of technology.  The curriculum taught falls into three main areas: Computer Science (coding) Digital Literacy (Internet Safety) and ICT (using a range of technology to create, manipulate, organise and store digital data). Children will gain confidence and enjoyment from their activities. The use of technology will also support them across the entire curriculum and be accessible to all.

Pupils will leave our school as digitally literate and competent users of technology who will be able to operate successfully in a 21st century workplace. We want them to have a breadth of experience to develop their understanding of themselves as individuals within their community but also as members of a wider global community and as responsible digital citizens.

Implementation

At Stonham Aspal, computing is taught using a blocked curriculum approach. This ensures that the children are able to develop depth in their knowledge and skills over the duration of each of their computing topics. Our specialist computing teacher uses the Teach Computing scheme which are often richly linked to engaging contexts in other subjects and topics. Knowledge and skills are mapped across each year group to ensure systematic progression. Based upon the idea of a spiral curriculum, pupils revisit the three main strands of computing but the subject knowledge imparted becomes increasingly specific and in depth with more complex skills being taught. The computing curriculum is also enhanced by local resources and some classes have the opportunity to attend sessions run by BT at Adastral Park in Ipswich.

Digital Literacy is taught as part of PSHE lessons by class teachers to enable children to act safely and responsibly online. A mix of Project Evolve and Twinkl resources are followed which teach children about topics such as self-image and identity, privacy and security and online bullying amongst others.

Impact

The impact of this curriculum is that pupils leave Stonham Aspal Primary well-prepared for their secondary education. They are also competent, safe and responsible users of a range of technology who will be able to express themselves creatively using digital media. They will also be equipped to apply their skills in Computing to different challenges going forwards.
